Get ready Coliseum College Preparatory Academy community! A new high school classroom wing with 14 classrooms, two state-of-the-art science labs, a new gymnasium with training and weight rooms, and improved outdoor spaces for learning, wellness, and community use are coming to CCPA. Congratulations to Oakland Unified School District on the recent groundbreaking! ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is proud to partner with the District and Noll & Tam Architects on this progressive design-build project alongside this talented team:

Brailsford & Dunlavey | Shah Kawasaki Architects | BKF Engineers | Alter Consulting Engineers | Degenkolb Engineers | Merrill Morris Partners | Terraphase Engineering

This project marks a powerful investment in Oakland students. With 85% of graduates accepted to CSU campuses and 56% accepted to UC schools, CCPA continues to deliver outstanding college outcomes. As Oakland USD’s Chief Systems & Services Officer Preston Thomas noted, Peralta Colleges has been an essential partner in creating clear college pathways through dual enrollment and early college opportunities, helping students earn credits, build confidence, and successfully transition from high school to higher education.

A special shoutout to all our local Oakland project partners, your passion for this community shows in everything you bring to this project.

Thank you to Oakland voters for investing in CCPA students through Measure Y, we’re honored to help deliver on that commitment.

Congratulations to Martinez Unified School District on breaking ground this week on two new facilities — a new Transitional Kindergarten Building at Morello Park Elementary School and a new Auxiliary Gym at Alhambra High School. ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and SVA Architects are proud to be the design-build team bringing both facilities to life.

The Morello Park Transitional Kindergarten Building will deliver purpose-built space for the district’s youngest learners. At Alhambra High School, the new Auxiliary Gym gives students a modern facility built for athletics and activities—go Bulldogs!

Both projects are made possible by the Martinez community’s passage of Measure O. Thank you to the voters who invested in these students.

A special thank you to Interim Superintendent Janelle Eyet and Chief Business Official Andy Cannon for joining us at the groundbreaking alongside Board of Education members Brenda Leal, Anne Horack Martin, Courtney Masella-O’Brien, Logan Campbell, and Tania E. Brugger.

Many thanks to our project team — Cumming Group, Thornton Tomasetti, Carroll Engineering and ANLA Associates.

We’re proud to be building for this community.

2025 West Best Projects

Award of Merit, K-12 Education: Isaac R. Montanez Elementary & Middle School

Brentwood Union School District’s 13th school provides 38 classrooms for approximately 700 students and includes outdoor recreation spaces and community infrastructure improvements, funded largely by a school bond.

This $69-million school was named after Isaac “Ike” Montanez, a devoted teacher and principal who dedicated nearly 30 years to the community. Originally planned as two separate phases—first the elementary school, with the middle school to follow as funds became available—the team successfully merged both into a design-build project.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is proud to announce that the FedEx Distribution Center in Richmond, California received two prestigious honors from the Tilt-Up Concrete Association — the Best Project Award and the inaugural Sustainability Award.

This 220,000-square-foot facility processes up to half a million packages per day during the peak holiday season. Designed to achieve zero emissions within five years, the project is recognized as the greenest distribution facility in the western region, supporting an electric fleet of 180 vehicles.

Key Sustainability Highlights:

  • Proprietary overhead electric fleet charging infrastructure, carefully coordinated and energized through phased implementation.
  • High-performance building envelope and advanced emissions detection system.
  • Deep-wick ground improvement solution and 3.2 acres of on-site bio-retention.
  • Reuse of casting slab material for foundation construction.
  • Low-carbon concrete used in slab-on-grade applications.
  • Pervious asphalt and bioswales to promote groundwater replenishment.

These achievements reflect ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s continued leadership in innovative, sustainable construction and its commitment to reducing environmental impact through cutting-edge building technologies.

Alameda County Fire Training Center has broken ground in Dublin, CA!

Our design-build team members celebrated the event alongside Alameda County General Services Agency, Alameda County Fire Department, 6D PMCM and Kitchell as construction begins on the new cutting-edge facility designed to elevate Alameda County firefighter and first responder training.

Featuring an 8,000 SF classroom building for advanced instruction, a 5,500 SF 5-story training tower for live-fire training, multiple roof simulation props for targeted training exercises, as well as confined space and rescue training areas to replicate complex emergency scenarios, this new facility will provide a realistic, safe, and effective training environment for Alameda County emergency personnel.

The groundbreaking ceremony was not just a celebration of progress but also a heartfelt expression of gratitude toward everyone who made this vision possible. Many thanks to all those in attendance, especially dignitary speakers:

– Scott Haggerty, President, Alameda County Board of Supervisors

– Eric Moore, Deputy Fire Chief, Alameda County Fire Department

– David Haubert, Supervisor, Alameda County

– William McDonald, Fire Chief, Alameda County

– Kimberly Gasaway, Director, General Services Agency, Alameda County

The Regional Surface Water Supply (RSWS) Project for the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (SRWA) received the National Award of Merit 2024 from the Design Build Institute of America. The project, in Hughson, CA, provides water from the Tuolumne River via an existing infiltration gallery, a new intake structure and raw water pump station and pipeline, which is treated at a new water treatment plant and delivered to the cities of Ceres and Turlock for municipal and industrial uses. The project delivers a long-term, sustainable water source that will allow for integrated use of groundwater and surface water.

Collaboration at the Heart of the Project

Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (SRWA) desired a collaborative process while using the BVDB model. This was communicated early by the SRWA team and reinforced through early engagement with the design-build community, distributing draft procurement and contract documents for review and input, and establishing and encouraging two-way communication. This level of collaboration continued throughout the project. When issues arose, particularly during the pandemic, the entire team came together to do what was best for the project. The best solution for the project was always put first by all parties.

The RSWS project created a drought-resilient, diverse and quality water supply to the surrounding community that also benefited agricultural areas nearby. The project provided environmental benefits to aquatic species in the upper reaches of the Tuolumne River. The team included Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (Owner), Jacobs (Design-Build Engineer), West Yost Associates (Owner Advisors) and key specialty contractors: ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, Mountain Cascade, and San Joaquin Electric.
