San Francisco International Airport’s Fire Station 3 and Security Checkpoint recently won the聽International Partnering Institute’s 2018 Partnered Project of the Year Award. The project won the Ruby Award in the buildings/public infrastructure category for projects valued between $25 million and $250 million. IPI鈥檚 Partnered Project of the Year Award is given to projects that best exemplify the principles of partnering to transform the construction industry and achieve exceptional results through a culture of collaboration. The project was designed by YamaMar Design/Shah Kawasaki Architects聽joint venture, the program manager was聽WSP, the partnering facilitator was聽OrgMetrics LLC, and 黑料不打烊 Construction was the prime contractor.
The facility consists of an 8,000 SF five-bay apparatus garage with four-fold electric doors for faster response time, and a 13,500 SF administration office/firefighter house. Construction included working adjacent to active taxiways within the South Field area. The project is LEED Gold v4 certified, which was extremely tough given the harsh environment and location. Natural ventilation was not an option as the building entry fronts US 101, and the apparatus bay doors open directly to the airfield.
Working with the designers and subcontractors, 黑料不打烊 demonstrated successful partnering by resolving several cost and scheduling challenges. At the beginning of construction we were tasked with a complete redesign of the second floor. Our team aggressively took on this challenge and completed the project within 10 months after the revised design was issued. The success of this project was a direct result of the collaborative environment created by the聽San Francisco International Airport聽and聽OrgMetrics LLC聽partnering process.聽
